pulling substrings, test first

How can I get AppleScript to help me remove the "job number" out of
the following string:

Q1892_04_NGSS Exterior AM Gel.indd

I just want the "Q1892" segment.

Also, I need the code to be smart enough to refuse to take out strings
from data like this:

JetBlue | Help

I know that I should be trying to use the underscores to my advantage,
however, I don't know how to test for the job numbers.
