Someone on this list suggested I'm paranoid. The question is not whether I'm paranoid, the question is: Am I paranoid *enough*?

When you are a hobby programmer and this script is just for you and maybe a handful of friends - let it be.

But if you program for money and this script will become production code, I think you better start getting paranoid. What I learned from almost 27 years of programming is, that you better don't assume anything about the content of temporary folders. And never ever delete anything in there, except if you created it.
