I wasn't saying that it didn't work reliably any more, I just observed that
the global Finder preference setting for showing the name extension does not
appear to have an absolute effect. Rather, a scope policy apparently exists
to allow an individual file's attributes to supercede those that might be
expected to be derived from the preference setting. In other words, even
though the Finder preferences specify that extension names aren't to be
displayed, the extension hidden property might still be false for files that
have had that property implicitly set.
