2/ I don't know how "delay" works. Usually you would do your check in an "idle" handler, so as to let the machine idle between two calls - while you are maybe making it quite busy, I don't know.
3/ When you program in Smile (that's a free but powerful AppleScript editor that we make), it's natural to issue some debug messages to trace exactly what happens. Otherwise, you may have to make a log file, where you would print what happens when.
