FWIW, I can think several ways to run a script that accesses the finder selection that don't involve changing the finder selection. Via menus or the dock.

As for the issue raised, I'm rather interested in the solution as well. About a year ago I managed to mangle together a script that used the local IP address, combined with the file path to create a clickable URL, but I'm sure there's a better way.
