No Default Application Error Message

I have some scripts saved as applications and have icons for these
applications in my Dock. Much of the time, these script applications launch
without problem when I click on their icons in the Dock. Intermittently,
however, when I click on the icon in the Dock, the following message
appears:
There is no default application specified to open the document "(null)".
If I click on the icon again, sometimes the same error message appears and
sometimes the script application launches properly.
I have replicated this problem on two different machines. Both systems are
running OS X 10.3.9 (Panther).
Is there some way to avoid these intermittent errors?
