Applescript errors

  • Subject: Applescript errors

I have two unrelated errors I need to ask about. The first one is:

I have a script that is supposed to manipulate the files in a folder.
It has been working for some time without error. In the last couple of months,
it has stopped working when run from the script menu, unless run immediately
after a re-boot of the computer. It partially processes the first file in the list,
then pops up the dialog:

	AppleScript Error

The script is flawed or AppleScript is installed improperly.
Press "Edit" to edit the script in Script Editor.

If I run the script from the Script Editor, it works flawlessly. I have compiled and
saved after running from the Editor but the compiled version still doesn't
run from the menu, unless immediately after a re-boot.

Any suggestions as to what might be the cause of the error? Could there be some
corrupt preference file that is only invoked when a script is run directly from disk?

The second one is:

I have a script the runs just before midnight every day. It is supposed to sweep
files out of a directory, if they exist, and do nothing if they don't. When there are
no files in the directory, it is supposed to put up a dialog for a few seconds saying
as much. However, since it runs at such a late hour, most of the time the screen
is in power save mode and instead, I get an error saying:

The Applescript event has timed out.

Is there a test that can be run in Applescript to check for the power save condition
to avoid this error. (I want the dialog because I also run it manually from the script
menu).

TIA,

Jim Brandt
