If there's a genuine confusion here, it's because the term "AppleScripter" tends to get used as a convenient but misleading shorthand for "Print Publishing Workflow Development Expert". e.g. I can script applications in five different languages (six if I keep the Camel book permanently open;), but I simply don't have the level of industry experience that a Shane or a Ray or a Hanaan has, which is why they're the ones earning the big bucks and I'm not. (the rotters;p)

Can't talk for the others but I think you've got a "rose tinted" view of the print industry :-(

I've done 20 years hard labour in that industry and I know a few people who write scripts to make other people's lives easier or give themselves more time to goof off - but I don't know anybody who has scripted their way to a fortune or even full time employment.

You either hand your work over for a pat on the back because you are an employee or end up giving it away because you script for enjoyment or diversion.

That's why I'm yet to be convinced about the economics of the "open source" movement. I like using it and naturally contribute to the ethos - as we all do when we discuss and exchange ideas in forums like this one - but it's also screwing us if we want to make enough money to pay the bills.

I see it being like "royalty free" image making. Loads of people who are prepared to enthusiastically give their knowledge and labour away for peanuts - certainly not enough to live on even if you are incredibly successful in the market - most often because it isn't their primary source of money.

The killer blow is that clients then expect full-time professionals to lower their charges because the generic competition is so cheap.

BTW end users wouldn't know what *dot gain* (physical or optical) was and they wouldn't expect to pay to learn about it and certainly not pay for an independent solution to deal with the consequences of it.
