This sounds like your result is not being returned correctly.  You need to add it to the keyAEResult '----' parameter of the reply event.  If you do this, then "the result" will be populated in AppleScript.

As for the documentation of the chevron notation, it isn't really documented.  You're much better off defining your own terminology and using that.
