Preschoolers with iPods, wow.  What's the world coming to? :). But
chances are even then all they would need  is for iTunes to see them.
I don't think I've ever used my iPod from the Finder.

USB keys are more likely to be a concern; shame that Finder setting
doesn't distinguish among different types of removable media.

I would go with moving the icons offscreen as mentioned by Ken.

Although, what about the  Sidebar in Finder windows???
