The name of the database in question starts with a space. I'll try
again tommorrow changing that parameter, since adding the "+" symbol
in front didn't help, though I thought it might be an end to my
problems. There is a line described in the open remote dialog that
states the "path to file" (which doesn't seem right, Im not trying to
reach the file, just open the DB remotely) starts with "fmnet". I
think the right syntax should start with "FMP7" as you stated.

<http://filemakertoday.com/com/showthread.php?t=10569>

"fmnet://" works from within FileMaker, but only "fmp7://" is registered
with your OS as a URL protocol. The "fmnet" URI-ish thing will work in
FileMaker's own file references and "Open Remote...", but not on the
rest of the system with a standard gURL (get URL or open URL) command.

You could use something like MisFox or RCDefaultApp on each system to
register "fmnet:" as belonging to FileMaker, or just use the "fmp7"
variant that works everywhere.

BTW, although I didn't think of it earlier, you could download the free
trial of FileMaker Pro 9 and use it to open the database remotely and
find the link to the file, even if you haven't upgraded. When I use
(non-trial) FileMaker Pro Advanced 9's "File > Send Link..." command on
a shared database, I get something like this:

<fmp7://local.ip.address.here/Database+File.fp7>

I don't have any that start with spaces to test, but it shouldn't be
difficult to nose it out.
