By way of deliberately avoiding another willie-waving-fest about languages
and all, the one idea to avoid is that there's one true way. There is what
works best for you, and everything else. Having said that, string
manipulation is one of the biggest holes in generic AppleScript. As in it
kinda sucks at it.
However, I find some amusement at the idea that it's a "pieces of cake" in
<language>. That's absolutely silly. It's no such thing...
...unless you are familiar with <language>.
I defy someone who knows nothing about a language whatsoever to do something
useful with it sans lots of really hard work. No programming language is
easy. None. Not AppleScript, not python, not ruby, most certainly not perl,
and anything even vaguely related to C is not allowed to be used as part of
any sentence in any way that talks about "easy".
AppleScript doesn't have to do everything well. Lord knows none of the other
languages do, why should AppleScript?
Oh, and yes, while Apple does ship the most applications with AppleScript
support from any one single company, they ship far too many, (as in "any")
applications with really BAD dictionaries. That's inexcusable. Apple must,
by definition, lead the way in "How To Do It Right". Thus far, their grade
in "Leading The Way" would be, even charitably, a solid "F".
What else...
Oh yes, just to round it out, (Finshed Deathly Hollows in four hours, my
answer to all queries on same is "Ginny Weasley is runing guns to Nicaragua,
Ron's deep into Ale and Whores, Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies") I think that
AppleScript Studio is really a dreadful AppleScript tool, unless it's real
purpose was to drive you to learning ObjC as the only way to get the stupid
thing to work right. Rather script Eudora than use that fetid pile of ugh.
....and I really, really hate Eudora.

Here¹s a helpful tip for job interviews: try not to stab your future boss in
the arm with a freshly sharpened pencil. If you must stab someone with a
pencil, have the common sense to dull the point to a state where you can be
sure it won¹t easily break the skin.
