Ugh. So very, very true. Looking at the Unix shells, you get the
impression that the evolution of text-based interfaces stopped about
30 years ago and hasn't moved since. And let's not even mention
things like Unicode support or real typography.
Unfortunately, the folk best placed to do something about it - i.e.
Unix experts - are those with the least motive for doing so (they
already know how to use it themselves) and the most reason for not
doing so (significant change would obsolete their existing skills).
I think your best hope is that Microsoft's Monad or PowerShell or
whatever they're calling it these days starts to seriously rock as it
matures, thereby motivating the Unix crowd into pulling their own
socks up pronto lest they <gasp> have to admit publically to being
totally pwned by Redmond.
