FTR, I'm not arguing that shell development tools aren't primitive.  I'm saying that the shell is itself somewhat primitive, and the impedance match between the tools and the language is about right.  The effort that would be involved in making a modern IDE for shell scripting is probably better spent elsewhere - like, say, adding support for regular expressions to core AppleScript and/or the Finder. :)

I'd much rather make "do shell script" less necessary than make it easier to come up with the stuff between the quotes.
