I wanted to reply to more of that post, but I'm celebrating something I share with Harry Potter and don't want to take the time (and this thread is becoming tedious).

Yeah, the TIDs find and replace is one such "WTF" solution in AppleScript. Considering that to be "normal" just shows how lacking it is in ways that Hamish already enumerated.
And again, where are those trig functions? Just because Ed "didn't take trig" (which would be a sad commentary on the education system where he grew up) doesn't mean that there aren't others who would like them in a purportedly broadly useful language. I manifestly do have a use for them, and a lot of other kinds of functions that are missing in AppleScript.
To reiterate, there are trig functions available in assembler - they're built into the CPU's instructions set, so WTF is the reason I don't have them in AppleScript? Adding them would be drop dead easy compared to some of the enhancements we've all longed for over the years.
Last thing (to Ed). We are here on this list because we use AppleScript, and use it to great advantage in many situations. But to suggest that it's a panacea is just nonsense. And there are times when the speed difference isn't just a few ticks (a disingenuous assertion), but minutes. We could do a comparison of some "finds" on a large directory if you'd like. When the time difference is significant, a better solution just might be worth a look. But YMMV.
