I would have said, "That's not necessary, but if you insist." And if you had insisted, I would have ordered something no more than in the middle range of the prices on the menu. I would also have let you choose the restaurant.
But my answer to your message was based on the circumstances that you presented, not on what I would have done.
Essentially, never make an offer that you can't afford to honor because the other person might take you up on it. And no matter how needy or greedy that person may be, the fact is that you did make that offer.
