Amazon Web Services

Anyone got any impressions of where to start with the idea (for 'Dumb Script Kiddie Grows Up' book cataloguing project in the foreseeable future but not all that close)?

I've done a bit of reading around the subject and Googling, and it's my impression that AWS makes itself available freely with the proviso that programmers' searches don't hammer the server to the extent that they get in the way of the *user* searches where Amazon can make a profit. Is that right?

My ignorance can barely be overstated. I know enough about the DOM so far to use XMLLib osax as a simple XML parser, and that's about it.

I have not found any comprehensible help on Googling for Where to Start for an Idiot with a Mac, because it *looks as if* all the stuff on the Internet is for Real Developers rather than hobbyists, for this platform.

I have a book on 'Data Mining Amazon' out from the library which is based at exactly the right noddy-level approach for me, but only knows about MS kit.

I'm afraid of SOAP (which everyone says isn't simple) and XML-RPC. I get the impression that both these things are available for the Mac, but I feel I've only got instructions for professional developers rather than idiots, so far.

As a Project-to-Blog-About I'm learning very simple Ruby in order:
a) not to teach myself bad habits by self-taught using Applescript exclusively and
b) to try to take a step back to doing the basics with strings/ regexes/XML from the ground up rather than in an Applescript-specific way.
This will almost certainly break my brain, because everyone else learning Ruby seems to start from being a professional developer rather than a hobbyist, but I will give it a go.

Does this "look like" a Ruby thing (because Ruby might be a better fit for web stuff?) or an Applescript thing (taking the approach of trying to start by using the browser)?

Can anyone point me to a where-to-start web page for, An Idiot With A Mac Who Wants To Know Where To Start? Is there one at all?

I want to do my own book catalogue eventually, using Amazon for lookup to help with data entry. I feel this would be fun and teach me a lot, and I like books.

Or am I in fact looking at a project that Is For professional developers rather than hobbyists? I know on the Windows side and the 'Data Mining Amazon' book that people using VB can get started with it, and some of them must be hobbyists (I think)?

What I'm looking for at this stage is the meta 'where to start' or 'don't even start' advice: is this something I should play with in six months' time or try to get started with in a small way soon? Is this something that only an insane person would even *try* to do as a hobbyist?

Hope somebody can help, and, sorry about the long stupid question.

Ruth.
