That said, and out of curiosity, how comes it seems to work here on 36-characters folder names:

list folder alias "emmanuel's hd30:Library:WSDev:spaces:9CAA9C92- E822-4496-9F28-2FD1D9DAF2E7:"
--> {".DS_Store", "profile.xml", "services", "uploads.plist", "users"}

That's a G4 with 10.4.9.

Intel/10.4.10

Because you coerced it to an alias and the pascal StringPtr was hashed in the alias?

Not sure what this implies. The test works as well with "file" and with the mere string: list folder "emmanuel blah".

% mkdir `uuidgen`

The string I tried: (path to desktop folder as string) & uuid
did not work. Casting that to an alias did.

Now that you say it, maybe the problem comes with paths longer than 512?

I can't find a reason for that right now. PATH_MAX is 1024.
