You might also look at LibraryThing <http://www.librarything.com/>
( I haven't tried either it or Delicious Library myself yet,
but I heard a talk on LibraryThing and it sounds good.
I believe they even have cheap bar-code scanners for sale. )

Honestly? Buy Delicious Library, then after you see what it does,
email Wil
Shipley, and chat with him. He's a bit...into...Cocoa, but he's a
nice sort,
and likes to encourage people such as yourself.
What I want to do as the beginning of the project is use my barcode
scanner to keep track of my library books so I can keep them up to
date. If I never have to do the data entry by hand (because the ISBN
is unambiguous lookup and I can get that with a barcode scanner), and
I don't have to worry about it being scalable because it's 20 books
at a time, I could have great fun with that. But the 'no data entry'
end of the project would depend on lookup, which is the bit I don't
know how to do.
Actually, you may be right. If I buy Delicious Library and use it to
enter all my 500 books, I've got the ordinary dumb user stuff done
for me in something I can use, it's worth $40 to me to get the data
entry done for me by somebody else doing lookup, and I could then e-
mail Will and ask if he could give me a few hints about where to
start with my silly 'keeping my library books up to date' app...
I had to come out of lurking mode for this topic because this is
something that I am also interested in getting started. I recently
upgraded from my G4 PowerBook to a Mac Pro. One of the main
projects on
my mind is to catalog our books and DVDs. Later, I also plan to
catalog
our software and ebooks.
My original plan was to buy an iMac with the built-in iSight as a
barcode scanner and get DVDpedia/Bookpedia from <http://bruji.com/
dvdpedia/index.html>. The 'pedias' supposedly do the searching for you
with the barcodes or UPC. However, after saving for a bit longer, I
decided to buy the Mac Pro with a 23" Cinema Display, but then found
that Apple no longer sells the iSight. Now that my plan is bust, I
haven't decided yet on which handheld barcode scanner is compatible
with
my Mac, or my Palm PDA would be my second choice.
However, I also still need to upgrade FileMaker Pro (currently have
version 6 still on my PowerBook.) and could use the latest FMP as my
database. If so, I was considering using AppleScript to do the looking
for me through Amazon. I also looked into using SOAP but found it
overwhelming because I could not find a clear starting point. Once I
decide on a handheld scanner, I may still use DVDpedia, as it is
inexpensive, then export to FMP because that will enable me to have a
bit more time to learn all the new changes in FMP and AppleScript
changes in FMP that will affect my old FMP scripts.
Our DVD and book collections are quite large, so I'm not sure it
will be
a task I'd want to do as simple data entry myself. I waited to do this
project on a new Mac because my PB has only USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 is
much
more bearable for scanning when looking at thousands of items to
catalog. Eventually, I'll have to export to some sort of database
on my
Palm because the main reason for getting the catalog done is to
keep the
database on our PDAs so we don't buy multiple copies of the same DVDs
and books when shopping.
Hopefully this discussion will provide some insight into what
others may
be doing and recommend. I'll take another look at Delicious Library as
it looks like a Bluetooth bar code scanner can be bought with it.
And I
almost deleted this topic - so little time even when lurking, you
know.
