Thanks to both of you.
I can actually run Dashcode now (and hope they won't break it on Leopard's notional release date, because it'll probably _take_ me till October to figure it out...).
Thanks particularly to Mark for catching my more obvious errors, like the persistent off-by-one thing that haunts anybody like me more familiar with writing Applescript code than Scary Things That Look Like C, and the slight confusion between functions and methods, and the assignment and equality operators... and the _knowing which part of a substring to throw away_ (which crept in because I was cutting and pasting from a firstname-lastname function that probably wanted to keep both bits...) and reminding me how to use those funny operators (I can usually only remember 'increment by one'.)
At the moment, I can nearly run it... I keep getting unfriendly parse errors from Dashcode telling me 'object: the result of expression "srch" does not allow calls', which it does whether I paste the ISBN validation bit into 'srch' or call it from inside 'srch'... I suspect this may be some security thing, or more likely I need to declare what I'm going to do in the weird thing that looks like html (which has 'onsearch=srch(this.value)' ), but given the help I should be able to figure it out if I get a javascript book...
Thanks again. It doesn't work yet, but given the clues Mark and Philip have given me, I should be able to figure out something to make it work soon...
Ruth (...Dashcode is cool and wonderful. It's pretty and I can almost understand it...) B
