Not your question, but the problem comes from a kind of flaw in
AppleScript, where if the programmer doesn't care specially, a
command which return a list will return the item out of the list if
there is only one.
This, just to remind you that you may face this unwanted behavior in
various situations, and it's a good idea to test what a command
supposed to return a list does when returning a single item. For
instance, in XMLLib, XMLGetText returns a string when the direct
parameter is a list with one item.
