Sounds more like you have a bad pref-file there..

The display settings are stored in:

~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver.001122334455.plist

where '001122334455' is you MAC address of the machines main ethernet card.

Also known as:

defaults -currentHost read com.apple.windowserver

or use System Events property list facilities.
