was sure that I tried both earlier; but save as bundled app works now.
Of course both should work; and I would still like to understand why
save as
standard app does not.

Works fo me too, here (Intel box with 10.4.11).
When saving a script as an application, there are two formats available
in the "Save as..." dialog.
Have you tried both?

Hello Bruce
A "regular" app is a PPC-only one; a bundled app is a universal one
(i.e. with both PPC and Intel machine code).
This makes a big difference, as a regular applet will expect everything
it needs, directly or indirectly, to be available in PPC code.

I appreciate your help but I think reading the log too closely may be
sending us in the wrong direction. Here is some leading info from the
latest
crash. Nothing about LiveType; but same result.

The problem is that each of the crash logs you have provided is
somewhat incomplete, as the crash occured in an "unknow thread".
Anyway, it seems that those crashes all occured while running your
sample regular applet, as their logs all show: "Rosetta: yes" (Rosetta
being the PPC->Intel translation engine).
You are right, the crash logs themselves do not mention LiveType.
But you once provided us with additional info found into another log
(seems to have been system.log):

OTOH, perhaps some informative messages get written to some log file,
very
likely console.log, while double-clicking the failing application.

Could you have a look, and see whether such messages appeared upon each
