Hello Emmanuel.

Just for see, using Mail.app, I set the encoding to UTF 8 and add an ellipsis in the Subject header.
How will be treated, I don't know (as I don't know why the MacRoman encoding is always greyed).

And it has been nicely encoded according to the RFC, so as to avoid 8-bit characters in mail headers:

=?utf-8?q?Re=3A_Bad_Characters_from_Unicode=E2=80=A6?=
Is there a way to set Mail.app to default to UTF 8 ?

Subject: =?utf-8?q?Re=3A_Bad_Characters_from_Unicode=E2=80=A6?= Subject: Re: Bad Characters from =?utf-8?q?Unicode=E2=80=A6?= Subject: =?windows-1252?q?Re=3A_Bad_Characters_from_Unicode=85?=

And there are still AppleScripters who complain that perl and C are too hard to read.

Everyone should try sorting recent messages by subject. Do the formatted subject lines match the original? Does your mail client support sorting by In-Reply-To: and Reference: headers?

There are reasons for unicode. Printing, mathematics, chemistry, and non-Romance languages come to mind. Efficient electronic communication is NOT one of them. There is a high correlation between styled subject lines and spam. If it weren't for the List- ID: header I would never have seen the three messages above.

Shall we talk about gratuitous word wrapping (above) ? The SMTP RFCs allow paragraphs to be 998 characters long. The 80 character limit is to support teletype machines and thermal printers.

Let's hear it for English-like email.

- 1 - I explicitely wrote that I did that "for see" because we met an annoying behaviour before.

- 2 - No, Mail.app doesn't sort by In-Reply-To:
no more by Reference:

- 3 - I wish to use Unicode because, at last, it gives me the ability to write correctly my name.
I am tired to be forced to write it KOENIG when it is KŒNIG simply because english doesn't know the Œ character !
