Desktop files in OS neXt are very different from earlier Apple "classic" OS's. In particular, they are individualized to the current logged-in user and they are not regular files that are moved in a special way to the desktop. They are actual copies of files that may reside elsewhere. Editing the copy may not change the original!
In classic OS we had a "Put Away" command that would remove a desktop file and put it back into the disk, volume, and directory from which it came. It was possible to create a file on the desktop and a put away request would inform you of that and politely ask you to move it manually.
Personally, I use a, perish the thought, shell script that makes hard or symbolic links to files that I want to appear on the desktop. That way they have a home and I can clean the desktop by simply discarding the link files. It's almost an old fashioned Finder_Put away command and editing the desktop image does edit the original file.
It crosses my mind that an AppleScript drag and drop application could do the same thing with Apple-style alias files. Perhaps it could also be arranged so that a download using a browser could automatically be put in a Downloads folder while also creating an alias on the desktop. A smart folder called Download, perhaps?
Has anyone created such a thing? My shell script is way too personal to be offered as-is.
