Original item of alias file

Hi,
according to Finder dictionary an alias file has the original item property, but its value is returned only if the alias file can be resolved (i.e. it is on a mounted volume).

There is any way under OS X to get the original item of an alias pointing to a file or folder on a not mounted volume (like in the old days of os9)?

nino
