Sorry, I should have been more explicit... :-(

With Nigel's code:
- files written by a PPC and an Intel are identical.
- a file written by either a PPC or an Intel will be correctly read on a PPC.
- a file written by either a PPC or an Intel will be incorrectly read on an Intel.
