Wow. I never thought they'd get around to:
"Updated Language Guide
Have examples and constructs of the AppleScript language at your fingertips.
AppleScript Language Guide, updated for Leopard, is the essential guide for
scripters and developers."
Especially since Matt's book seemed to fit the bill. But having it
documented by Apple is the right thing to do. It's also the final, and
ultimate, confirmation that AppleScript really and truly is here to stay
(well we've known that for a little while, but glad to see it formalized).
The "original" AppleScript 2.0 was going to be a re-written language, fully
object-oriented, etc. That idea was dropped some time ago.
These changes for Leopard (which I did not beta test so I'm seeing this for
the first time, like you) are significant enough that perhaps it will indeed
be a newly-minted "2.0". They're going to run out of incremental numbers
some day soon (1.15 would be the highest possible, and they're up to 1.10.7
in OS 10.4.10) so it would be a good time to do it. It's more in character
for them to just bump it up to 1.11, however, so I remain open-minded until
Leopard is released in a few days' time. Making AS fully Unicode would
certainly, in my mind too, be sufficient reason to go for broke and call it
2.0. There may never be a more significant change before they run out of
numbers. We'll see - waiting with bated breath.

I always heard that when AppleScript 2 was released the text would
be fully unicode text...
Well, have a look here:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/300.html#applescript
Does this mean that Leopard includes the long awaited AppleScript 2
update?
Also, browsing through this list I see a number of changes to
features that have been vexing posters on this list for some time now.
Of course, I'm sure that many people's most hated/favorite but/
feature has been fixed/left out, but this looks like progress to me.
ES
# Full Unicode Support for AppleScript
Combine strings from multiple languages, now that all text is fully
Unicode.
# Scripting Bridge for Objective-C
Query and control applications with integrated AppleScript support
using other languages such as Ruby, Python, and Objective-C thanks
to the new Scripting Bridge architecture.
# Enhanced Application Object Model
Easily create scripts that are both generic and portable, now that
script statements can target applications by name, bundle identifier,
creator code, or POSIX path. New application properties can be used
to determine if an application is running and whether it is frontmost.
# Read/Write Property Lists
Create and edit Mac OS X property lists. Support is built into Leopard.
# Applescript Scriptable System Preferences & Applications
Do more with AppleScript. A number of system preferences in Leopard
are now scriptable, including the Dock, Security, Exposé, Accounts,
and Networking as well as a number of features in iChat.
# Updated Language Guide
Have examples and constructs of the AppleScript language at your
fingertips. AppleScript Language Guide, updated for Leopard, is the
essential guide for scripters and developers.
# Descriptive Error Messages
Determine the cause of script errors more easily with improved
descriptive error reporting.
# Updated Folder Action Support
Enjoy greater reliability with folder actions, which are triggered by
the file system instead of the Finder. Folder actions now have their
own server, and each folder action now runs its own copy of the new
Folder Actions Dispatcher application.=
