Well, have a look here:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/300.html#applescript

Does this mean that Leopard includes the long awaited AppleScript 2
update?

Obviously, you won't get a definite answer to this question for another week as Leopard is still currently under NDA.

Depends on your definition of 'AppleScript 2.0', I imagine. The name has been floating about for the last ten years, with rumours suggesting it would be a major rethink/redesign/rewrite with 'professional' features such as a class-based object system instead of the current prototype (script object) based. I seriously doubt we'll ever see such a beast now given how the rest of the programming world has moved on since 1997: professional developers wouldn't be interested as they're already much better served by scripting languages such as Python and Ruby, and non-professional developers (i.e. the bulk of existing AS users) would be scared off by such radical changes. Thus, I'm pretty certain that apart from the ability to type Unicode characters directly in Script Editor we'll see only minor superficial changes, with the significant changes being largely under the hood.

That said, I would still expect Apple to increment the major version number just to reflect the changeover to Unicode if nothing else. Apart from being a non-trivial functional improvement for once (although I'm sure many of AppleScript's other longstanding deficiencies remain), such a change is unlikely to be 100% compatible with existing scripts (i.e. anything that requires old-style strings), in which case a major version change would definitely be indicated.

Once could speculate endlessly between now and the 26th, of course, but I think it'd just be a waste of time - with such a short time to go now it'll be less time and trouble - and less potential for self- embarrassment:) - just to sit tight and see what actually ships before commenting further [1].
