See the Release Notes ("Special Notes", par 2) for AS v1.10 (came with OS
10.4) at
<http://developer.apple.com/releasenotes/AppleScript/RN-AppleScript/index.ht
ml>

"Scripts that compare version numbers by coercing the version class to a
real number and then doing numeric comparisons will need to be changed. The
coercion from version to real has been changed to allow the second and third
parts of the version number to be 0..15 instead of 0..9. As a result, the
version 1.2.3 will now coerce to the real number 1.0203. Previously, it
would coerce to the real number 1.23."

So, for now at any rate, the maximum "third part" is .15 max.
