Yes, Applescript Studio is free*, FaceSpan is not.

The point I was trying to clarify was both can create Applications that are
free to distribute and that do not require a separate helper or runtime app
to be installed.

*Technically, though it's not "free," it's part of the system you pay for
when you buy a mac or buy a new system upgrade, so, that may make it even
more inviting to use than free, because you've already paid for it.

On the other hand, for the application the OP described, Facespan is
probably more appropriate.
