Just to back-up what Jean-Baptiste just said, personally I always used to end up tearing (the limited remains) of my hair out when trying to script Mail.
Eventually I stumbled upon Xmail which, for most of my purposes, does the same job without the associated hair loss. Nowadays, I go straight to Xmail before attempting anything with Mail.
If you value your barnet, you might want to have a look at it.
