And that was my point, really: for a scripter -- and the whole discussion
began in the context of scripting -- it shouldn't be confused with the
selection (and often is). Understanding that it is something separate makes
dealing with it much easier.

Yes, in the GUI reference is often made to "_the_ insertion point". But I'd
argue it's still also a selection in GUI terms; it's the idea of selection
_or_ insertion point that disturbs me.
But even if you accept the idea that an insertion point in the GUI is not
really a selection, I still don't think you can then call the two terms
synonyms, which is what the OP suggested and what I objected to. Moreover,
as a scripter, such an approach is only going to confuse things.

I'm sorry, but I fear that's gone over my head again. When I said "if
anything", I was referring to the situation possible in many apps, where
there is no selection (the property returns null or an empty list).
> So, Shane, tell me sincerely: has my post been that illegible?
No, but it is a confusing area. However, when you said "maybe are you both
right", I assumed you were referring to the idea of selection and insertion
point being some kind of synonyms, and I think that's not only wrong, but
the sort of approach that's going to make scripting harder than it needs to
be.
For a scripter, I think the key thing to understand is that insertion points
are unrelated to the selection.
