The 57th character in your subject is displayed as various characters:
"Š" or "?" or 'a umlaut' or 'A umlaut' or null or perhaps space.
(Which corrects my description in my original post.)

A display dialog does not show the character, so it's displaying either a space or a null. When I do something wrong and get the error message "Can't display list ... as text", the character in the error message is either 'a umlaut' or 'A umlaut'.

Very strange!

Perhaps the offending Unicode character has no ASCII equivalent (when I hit
send in Entourage I got a warning about some Unicode, but it was late so I
just clicked OK). What was character 56?
