I need to know which unicode character is causing this problem. Scripting Additions has no 'unicode number' function (too bad), so I tried to copy and paste while avoiding conversion to see what the unicode character really is. I copied from Mail and pasted into TextWrangler and got this ...

(If you can't see the picture, the border contains: Latin 1, 0080, 00FF)

This is the character that translates to ascii 138 in a string. The peculiar thing is the ascii 138 character only causes a problem if it is translated from unicode. If I construct a string, such as,
set someString to ("someText" & ascii character 138 & "someMoreText")
which avoids unicode, then the 138 character does not cause my repeat loop to hang.
