There's no official way in either CoreFoundation, Carbon, or Cocoa. Better than hacking one of those apparitions, roll your own in AppleScript Studio. Very good first project.

And since you're specifically trying to make table columns line up, consider making an actual table instead of trying to fake it with a monospaced font.
