Is this a bug or a Mail shortcoming?
A smart mailbox is not a real mailbox; it is a representation of a
group of search criteria, and is analogous to smart folders in the
Finder. A smart folder is actually an XML file, and I wouldn't be
surprised if a smart folder were XML as well.
That's right. A "smart folder" isn't really a folder. It really is a
property list file. Now I'm curious about what a "smart mailbox"
really is ... so I made one and started looking ...
If you have 1 or more smart mailboxes, you will find a file in ~/
Library/Mail/ named SmartMailboxes.plist that contains their names
and search criteria (but not the search results). This is very
similar to a smart folder which is a plist file containing the search
criteria (but not the search results). (Which prompts the question:
Where is the search result stored? Probably in some invisible file?)
Also, if you look at Mail's dictionary, you will not find the word
'smart'. I'm thinking that this is a clear indication that smart
mailboxes are invisible to AppleScript. (?)
However, AppleScript may be able to get selected messages from a
smart mailbox. But, I haven't tried it.
