Of course if you do that, then you might want to set up an unencrypted
key (with secure permissions of course), after all, so you don't have to
type in a password.

That's my major usage.
Then you can simply do:
export RSYNC_RSH=ssh
# setenv RSYNC_RSH ssh # if using [t]csh
rsync -avz myname@myserver:/path/to/website/docroot local/copy/of/docroot
to download a local copy of what's currently on the server, or
rsync -avz local/copy/of/docroot myname@myserver:/path/to/website/docroot
to update the server with changes you've made in the local copy. In
each case rsync will automatically transfer only the files that have
changed since the last copy.
