Although the documentation suggests that open for access will create a file if none exists, I can't make that work for me either (using OS 10.4.11). So I use the Finder to make a new file and then open that file for access.

This is very bizarre. You're sure you're using the "with write permission" clause?

For me, at the very moment where I run:

set file_reference to open for access file "Macintosh HD:Users:emmanuel:Desktop:080425_043253.xml" with write permission

I can see a new file on my desktop. 10.4.11 as well (Intel.)
