Dave,
I don't see a need for Applescript to do as you ask.
From the help page:
To add an item to the Dock, drag its icon from a Finder window or the
desktop to the Dock. Notice that there is a separator in the Dock
between application icons and the Trash. Application icons go to the
left of the separator, and document icons go to the right of the
separator.
