You've taken that out of context -- that's in reference to reading and
writing files. The *classes* of text, string and Unicode text are
equivalent, but the same terms used as *parameters* to read/write do
different things.

It's unfortunate that the same words are used; I guess that's the price of
backwards compatibility. (And to confuse things a little more, "as text"
causes an error with the write command.)
