but in Mail (in 10.4.10) some of them were displayable.

Then it wasn't Unicode. :) It might have been using MacRoman... or if it was a mail message, it could have been using the Windows encoding, which is mostly compatible with Latin-1/Unicode but differs by having printable characters in the decimal range 128-159.

Right. They were displayable in 10.4.10 by some means. But they are no longer displayable in Mail or in the Finder by any means. And they no longer trap my script in an endless loop. What changed?


And where is the change documented?
