do shell script timeout too long

  • Subject: do shell script timeout too long

Hi,  I'm having trouble with a script with the following command.

do shell script "ssh user@machine ps ax"

The problem is when the remote machine is turned off or logged out.
It times out after the default 2 minutes which I've tried to shorten using
'with timeout of 10' .

Is there a different command I can use with the 'ssh' to check if the remote machine is on
or a way to shorten the timeout?

Thanks, Alan.
