Oh, I agree with you there. Most of the "pay to play" aspect of SSL and
certs is a scam of the highest order, and it's entirely probable that Apple
will implement it in such a way, (I think it's this way now, but I don't
know for sure), that it will never care if you're part of the big chain in
the sky, in which case, self-sign away.

The more that can be done to end verisign's silliness in this area, the
better.
