In an effort to debug this thing once and for all I'm running the script manually (through several hundred iterations) using Script Debugger with the Apple Event Log window open and logging All Events and Replies. My problem is that when the Apple Event Log window is open Script Debugger begins to run slowly after a hundred or so iterations and I'm afraid that this slowdown is affecting my results.

Yeah, the problem is that if you have a lot of log text, it takes time to layout and display the text.

You might try turning off logging of replies, or turn off events and replies and use ‘log’ commands just to log information you're interested in. (See the Options pop-up in the Event Log History window's toolbar.
