If it's an Intel xserve, you can do it with a single ipmitool command.

If it's a PPC xserve you can do it with "shutdown -h now", which also works
on Intels.

However, if you explain what your "series of moves" is, we can help you in a
more useful fashion, but in general, safe remote shutdown is a simple
process
