Quoting Richard Brown <email@hidden>:

I am looking at learning to use Applescript but before I invest time I
am wondering whether this is possible and whether Applescript is the
best tool.

Is it possible to write a script that will firstly check for the
drives and then sync only changed folders from the nas to the mac and
delete folders if they are deleted please? Is this the best tool?
Thanks.

You can do this with Applescript if you want to . . .but it sounds like RSyncX would be perfect for the job. It mounts/dismounts drives as required for backups and does a nice job of copying changed files only. Best of all . . . it's free since it's open source.
