By directly moving items to the trash, it is very likely that you're
short-circuiting that behavior.
Are you suggesting that the Finder offers a AppleScript command called
"delete <obj>" that behaves different from "move <obj> to trash"?

The Finder's dictionary states:
delete v : Move an item from its container to the trash
delete reference : the item to delete
→ reference : to the item that was just deleted
