The inefficiency might be annyoing but it is the only safe way I can think of.

You could use

set your_target_variable run script your_excel_source_variable

to convert from your_excel_source_variable to your_target_variable.

But imagine what happens if you got a source file containing malicious code. Might be pathological and paranoid, but better be safe then sorry ;-)
