'Tis always the missing details that bite one. This is with Leopard and I note
that there isn't such a plist with Tiger. Upgrade. :-)

Open the Preferences file, sort by date, open the Sound prefPane, change it,
and see if you can determine which ones of the changed plists might have a
corresponding value. That's how I found the above. If nothing there, check
/Library/Preferences/
